Ken Pivak's 'Girl Power' Project

I met Ken Pivak in the catsup aisle of a local food market. We started by comparing notes about catsup, then discovered that we were photographers, used the same camera, and we were neighbors. We became friends.

Ken is a successful mid-career photographer who is a people person. That is, he photographs a lot of them for advertising, entertainment and editorial clients. One of Ken’s many strengths is his ability to take a client’s concept and realize it in a way that effectively conveys the client’s message.

Recently, Ken told me about a test shoot he planned to do entitled Girl Power. “She is smarter, cuter, and cunning and she will not sit down any longer. “She is our future.” He asked me to be his behind the scenes photographer, creating photos he could use for Social Media as well a second set of eyes looking for things that he might not catch during the shoot.

Ken’s pre-planning was meticulous, and included Girl Power's back story, and a sketch of the set, the lighting and the characters. This provided the basis for the creative decisions he made during the shoot. Documenting his creative process, showing how he transformed the concept of Girl Power into reality with the help of actors Eden Shea Beck and Robby Devine, and makeup artist Anna Lee Contrelli, was an amazing experience that I want to share with you.
